Close to Home: Creating Local Support Networks. Starting now.

Hi y’all. Things are difficult in the U.S. right now, and I’m going to keep showing up because what we need most in dark times is each other.

In another unscripted episode of Subject to Change, I tell you how I’m personally coping and making feelings of fury & outrage actionable. I share what I’ve been learning about the systemic racism and brutality perpetuated by federal agencies like ICE and Customs & Border Patrol, referencing not only recent incidents of violence against white folks, but the history of violence against citizens of color and undocumented immigrants; it pre-dates the Trump Era by a lot. (Please watch this documentary; it’s a peek inside the cult-culture of immigration policing.)

More than anything else, I advocate for community and local action, using personal anecdotes to offer examples and underscore the necessity of direct involvement and collective resilience. I share in detail what I’ve been doing and explain why it’s important to start now by engaging in local organizing and building meaningful relationships within your communities. Connections are essential for enduring and challenging systemic oppression.

I conclude with reflections on duty, compassion, and why we can, and must, keep at it.
